Displaying cottages near Alston.

Our Alston self catering cottages inhabit a relaxing, quiet, remote Cumbria location in the North Pennines. Sitting 1000 feet above sea level, this friendly small, cobbled street town has surprisingly good options for shopping, offering a number of gift, craft, and antique shops. The town also has a number of cafes available and a fish and chip shop.

Alston is the starting point for the South Tynedale Railway, England's highest narrow gauge railway. Enjoy a scenic ride on one of their vintage steam trains through the glorious Pennine scenery, catching glimpses of deer and red squirrel.

Alston is well known for its 17th century stone buildings. The area's mining legacy has been referenced for tourism intentions across the North Pennines.

The town has been used for a number of filming locations. The Market Cross and Front Street were used in an adaption of Jane Eyre. In an ITV mini-series, ‘Oliver Twist' the town was tailored to resemble a seaside village where Oliver was born.

The market cross, which acts as a focal point in the center of town, was constructed in 1981 to replace one which was demolished by a wagon in January 1980. From April to September a regular producers' market takes place in the town hall selling food and crafts produced in Northumberland, Cumberland, and County Durham celebrating Alston's status at the heart of these three counties.

The Nenthead Mines Conservation Society holds regular open days where visitors can learn about the history of lead mining and take an underground tour of Carrs Mine. ‘The Pennine Way' the UK's first National Trail, passes by the edge of Alston and the Sea-to-Sea Cycle Route passes through the town.

Our Alston self catering cottages offer the chance to completely get away from it all, located in a tranquil place with beautiful countryside, friendly people, and historical sites. We also have other North Pennines Cottages
